Public Health Communications
My role at the Oklahoma State Department of Health (OSDH) was to handle all media inquiries and requests for information for a group of programs.
While in my first year at the OSDH, I wrote and released more than 20 press releases. These releases were for a variety of topics including public health alerts, public service announcements, public health campaigns, awareness days/weeks/months, and other topics.
I also learned from the graphic artists at the agency how to use the Adobe Creative Suite. I took advantage of countless hours of free online training to grow as a graphic designer and produce fresh and creative content for social media and other platforms.
During my time, I also began using an online tool to create short, visual, and entertaining videos to post to our social media platforms. This involved creating images in Adobe IdDesign and other programs, editing them together, creating titles and other content and putting it all together in various formats. These videos proved to be quite successful when looking at the analytics versus non-graphical posts.
I was also put in charge of creating and updating content for internal messaging boards. These images were seen by every employee in the building on a daily basis to keep them updated on current events in the agency, weather forecasts (custom created using my OK-FIRST training and experience), urgent announcements, and other content. I received praise from senior leadership numerous times for my implementation and work with this system.
My fellow PIO in the office has a history in newspaper writing and really helped me get a better grasp of AP Style and how to use it. All press releases sent by the agency must adhere to AP Style and were routinely proofread to ensure proper use.
Another part of my job was to serve as a producer on several video projects. These involved brainstorming with the video team on ideas for the project, setting up interviews and shoot locations, logging video and organizing the content into a finished product for editing. This taught me leadership and communication skills with a variety of partners both in the agency and out.
