Cody McDonell - Public Information Officer
With seven years working in various roles in the news media, two years in the fire service as a Public Information Officer, and two years working in media and public affairs for a state agency, I have experience in all levels of public relations.
While at the Department of Public Safety in the highway safety office, I've been in charge of close to $2 million in federal marketing and communications funds. These funds are set aside for various public awareness campaigns covering areas like impaired driving, distracted driving, seat belt and occupant protection use, and motorcycle safety. In my day-to-day operations at the Oklahoma Highway Safety Office, I am the main point of contact for the agency's marketing services vendor. I coordinate campaigns, have final signoff on many projects, and guide the marketing team in behavior change marketing. My most successful campaign at the Oklahoma State Department of Health was for the "CLICK for Babies" program at the OSDH. After my press release, this story went viral. With more than 50,000 shares across the globe, we blew our goal of 4,500 caps out of the water. The latest totals for this campaign have us receiving more than 50,000 purple caps from every continent except Antarctica. In late 2018, I was commissioned as a reserve police officer with the Town of Jones in Oklahoma County. I continue to serve the community not only as a police officer, but also as a volunteer firefighter in Jacktown Oklahoma. |
I am goal driven, have experience leading a team, and working on my own. I have experience managing multiple social media accounts and updating them during breaking news events as well as during awareness campaigns.
I have experience using the Adobe Creative Suite to create graphics for various projects. My experience working as a Photojournalist helps me to create original video and graphic content for our social media channels and website. I have used several content management systems to build and develop websites and maintain them on a long-term basis.
In early 2018 I was given the opportunity to attend the FEMA Advanced Public Information Officer course in Maryland. This course helped prepare me for my career as a PIO, giving me training in wide-scale scenarios and working with other agency PIOs during a crisis.
I continue to seek out and attend training in a wide variety of topics to grow as a person and as a Public Information Officer.
